The Mariana Islands are split into two jurisdictions of the United States: the Northern Mariana Islands and the few islands that are now a part of Guam. But these islands have a history before the confusing involvement of US. The indigenous Chamorro people are decedents of settlers who originated from modern day The Philippines in 1500BCE. Their cuisine is similar to other Pacific Islander cuisines: tied to the sea and the native fruits of their islands with trade occurring with neighbors like what is now modern day Papua New Guinea. However, upon Magellan’s β€œdiscovery” of the islands and the US’s involvement in the area starting in World War II, there has been significant influence from Spanish and American cuisines.
